Wednesday 6pm
Said Mass

Thursday 10:30am
Said Mass followed by coffee

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8:30am (Saturday: 9:30am)

Children and Young People

St Philip’s has a lively group of children and young people.

Sunday School meets every Sunday (apart from the first Sunday of the month, when everyone stays in Church for a special Children’s Mass) and there are stories, crafts, drama and other themed activities for age 4-11.

There is a Children’s area in the Church that is well stocked with books and toys for toddlers and babies. There is a weekly children’s activity sheet that relates to the day’s readings.

Children are encouraged to participate actively in the service. Their contribution and presence is particularly welcomed and appreciated by all at St Philip’s.

There are regular trips, the annual activity weekend away at Carroty Wood in Kent and events such as the Christmas pantomime and Messy Easter that are planned especially for children.

Speak to Mel, our youth and children’s rep, for more information.

Serving at the altar

Many of our younger members, children and teenagers, serve at the altar as acolytes, crucifer or thurifer. Our head server and clergy provide regular training for new and existing servers. New volunteers are always welcome! Please speak to Patrick, our head server.

Music

We have a regular children’s choir that sings at the Children’s Mass each month. All children are welcome to join. Please contact Mtr Anna or Fr David if your child is interested.

There is also a popular community choir: see the community page for more details.

Community involvement

Please see the community page for opportunities to get involved in the life of the community in Avondale Square and Old Kent Road. We are about to start hosting the Robes Project, a winder night shelter run by churches in Southwark. Please contact Fr David if you would like to volunteer for this.

Interfaith

We have a close link with the two Mosques in our parish, the Old Kent Road Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre (www.manuk.org) and the New Peckham Mosque. There are regular opportunities for joint discussion and sharing friendship together.

Prayer

Prayer and worship are central to everything we do at St Philip’s. There are many opportunities to join us in prayer and worship, including daily prayer (see above for service details). The church is open on Thursday mornings after the morning Mass until lunchtime for quiet prayer and contemplation.

If you are not able to join us at St Philips, you can join in with the daily prayer of the wider church via this link: https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/join-us-in-daily-prayer.aspx

We are happy to pray for anyone who requests it, and include prayers for those who have requested it who are ill in our daily services. We also include prayers for the different streets in our parish, and for those who have passed away or whose anniversary of death it is. Please contact one of the clergy if you have a special prayer request for yourself or someone else.

Growth in Faith

We have a monthly bible study group that meets in people’s homes, reflection groups in Advent and Lent, and parish trips to places of interest. Please see the calendar and weekly noticesheet for details of current groups and events.
